Lee University Welcome Center

Project Overview

In collaboration with Bliss Design Build, based out of Charlotte, NC, this environmental design project reimagines the historic Centenary Room – part of the original 1885 “Old Main” building – within a larger building renovation centered on welcome and connection. Historic architecture and narrative potential guided the design, honoring the building’s legacy while providing an opportunity for a cohesive, forward-looking experience. Along with the Welcome Center renovation, the Admissions, Financial Services, Residential Life, and Records offices were unified under one roof in the now Higginbotham Administration Building and Welcome Center. This project transformed the building into more than a collection of offices; it became a gateway for anyone visiting the campus. Through integrated graphics, intentional design choices, and careful spatial rhythm, the environment guides visitors with clarity while reinforcing a shared institutional identity – ensuring that the first step onto campus feels both grounded in history and distinctly inviting

What I contributed to the project…

Terrazzo Floor Design for the Lobby

Objective: To design a terrazzo floor inlay that anchors the front lobby outside of the new Welcome Center entrance, both symbolically and spatially. With a design inspired by the rivers of our region, the flowing forms establish a recurring visual language throughout the larger project, while the university seal – centered and contoured in brass inlays – creates a permanent focal point that grounds the space in tradition and identity.

Campus Diorama Display

Objective: To design a custom 6' x 4' campus diorama display that allows the viewer to see the entire campus from a bird’s-eye view. Featuring a sculpted miniature map with dimensional buildings and landscaped details, the installation provides a tactile, accessible overview of campus while reinforcing institutional identity through material, scale, and craftsmanship. The table that supports this diorama was also custom-designed, from the shape of the legs to the small details that echo similar architectural details on campus.

Historical Illustrations

Objective: To create a pair of large-scale, original illustrations in pen-and-ink style that honor the university’s early foundations in Sevierville, Tennessee, and its historic move back to Cleveland, Tennessee, after purchasing the Centenary College “Old Main” property. Through detailed linework and architectural study, the pieces preserve institutional memory while visually linking past and present within the renovated space. These pieces were custom-framed and displayed in the Lobby of the Higginbotham Administration Building.
